Shaw Library to Hold Early Literacy Event

CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library will hold a very special story time event on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. The featured story will be Up, Down, and Around, written by Pennsylvania author Katherine Ayres and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott. Call the Library at 765-3271 to register for either 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Each family in attendance will receive a paperback copy of the book.

Up, Down, and Around is this year’s book selection for One Book, Every Young Child,

Pennsylvania’s third annual collaborative project using the vehicle of a “One Book, One State” program to highlight the importance of early literacy development in preschooler’s ages 3-6 years. In its inaugural year, the One Book, Every Young Child program won a coveted national John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award.

Up, Down, and Around is billed as a “rollicking celebration of things that grow,” featuring children learning about a garden teeming with life, producing a variety of edible plants, such as corn that grows up, onions that grow down, and tomato vines that twine all around.

Studies show that activities like reading aloud and sharing books and stories are crucial to early learning.

By making this story hour a family event, parents and caregivers will not only enjoy sharing a story experience with their preschooler, but also learn ways to engage their child in activities such as talking about a book’s cover and illustrations, discussing the action in the book and favorite parts, pretend play related to the book and more.

This event is free and open to the public. To learn more about the One Book, Every Young Child initiative click here.

This program was supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by Pennsylvania’s Office of Commonwealth Libraries.
