Penn State DuBois Offers Summer Sports Camps

DUBOIS – The Art, Science, and Technology Institute and Kids in College at Penn State DuBois will offer Summer Sports Camps in June and July. Designed to keep area children active and healthy, basketball, volleyball and tennis camps will be offered on campus at Penn State DuBois, and in St Marys.

“There’s really something for everybody at every skill level,” said Youth Program Coordinator, Sueann Doran. “We have varsity team coaches and players from Penn State DuBois available to work with youth of different ages to learn basics or refine already developing skills.”

The Penn State DuBois Lions Basketball Camps runs June 16-19. Participants will work on shooting, passing, ball handling, defense, lay-ups, and one-on-one moves. Individual instruction will be coupled with games and contests and drills to practice at home after the camp ends. Several sections are available to accommodate different age groups. Dave Bennett, Penn State DuBois Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Pat Lewis, Penn State DuBois Women’s Basketball Head Coach and members of the Penn State DuBois men’s and women’s basketball teams will work with the camp participants.

Boys/Girls – Section 1, 8:00-11:00 am – for grades 1-2
Boys/Girls – Section 2, 9:00-11:30 am – for grades 3-4
Boys – Section 3, 12:30 pm-4:00 pm – for grades 5-8

Lori Sabatose will also be on hand for Tennis Instruction Day Camps with emphasis on court drills to reinforce strategy concepts. Supervised match play and games to enhance physical skills such as agility, quickness and endurance will be provided. The emphasis is on accentuating strengths and improving every aspect of the student’s game. Different sessions for varying age groups will be available.
Friday, June 20, 9:00 am-3:00 pm – for grades 1-6
Friday, July 11, 9:00 am-3:00 pm – for grades 7-12

Volleyball Camps be held the week of June 23-26, with sessions in both DuBois and St. Marys. Participants will not only learn volleyball basics and drills appropriate to the age level, but there will also be a focus on volleyball rules and techniques as well as the physical skills needed for this popular sport. Penn State DuBois women’s volleyball coach Jodee Thompson, assistant coach, Franny Wales, and members of the Penn State DuBois volleyball team will provide the instruction for the DuBois sessions. Mandy Woelfel, a physical education teacher and volleyball referee, will instruct the St. Marys volleyball class.
DuBois Section 1, 10:00 am-noon – for grades 3-6
DuBois Section 2, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm – for grades 7-9
St. Marys Girls’ Section, 9:00 am-11:00 am – for grades 3-5

Ending the sports camps will be Basic/Advanced Cardio Tennis to be held July 7-10. Taught by Lori Sabatose, International Coach and Head Women’s Tennis Coach at Clarion University, the camp will feature fun drills to give everyone an ultimate, high-energy workout. The class is more about being active and less about developing a killer backhand or forehand. These DuBois sessions will provide activities appropriate for the age range of the participants.

Section 2, 10:00 am-11:30 am – for grades 4-6
Section 3, noon-2:00 pm – for grades 7-12

“It’s going to be an active, skill-development filled summer for all participants at all age levels,” concludes Director of Continuing Education, John Piccolo. The sports camps are part of the programs organized by Continuing Education. The goal of Continuing Education at Penn State DuBois is to assist individuals and organizations in obtaining a competitive advantage through education and training. Workforce, professional, and personal development programs are provided for organizations and individuals of all ages. Programs are conveniently offered on campus, at outreach sites and/or at work sites across the region.
