Raiders\’ Two-Out Squeeze Play Beats Bisons 2-1

BELLEFONTE – A perfect two-out squeeze bunt by winning pitcher Robert Gummo in the fourth inning was the difference as Bellefonte nipped Clearfield 2-1 in Central Penn League schoolboy baseball action Friday afternoon.

The Bisons had no chance of getting an out on the high-risk play, set up by one-out singles by A.J. Jabco and Frank Parkes and a forceout at second base.

\”It was just an unexpected play,\” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said. \”We\’re playing back with two outs, and the kids lays down a perfect bunt in the grass toward third base.

\”By the time (Derek) Danver got to the ball, Gummo was at first base. Danver didn\’t even make a throw.\”

Cole McClarren relieved Gummo and got the save with three scoreless innings, though walking three and giving up three hits.

\”Both pitchers were pretty good, nice fastballs and curves,\” Lansberry said. \”They walked five, but we didn\’t cash in opportunities we had. We\’ve got to find a way to get a guy in from third base. Somebody has to step up and get the big hit.\”

Clearfield, 1-7 in the CPL and 4-11 overall, stranded runners in every inning, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth. Four of the runners were in scoring position.

The Bison run came in the first inning when Jarrin Campman singled, stole second and completed the trip around the bases on two groundouts, with Tanner St. Clair getting the RBI.

Bellefonte (8-6, 3-5 CPL) tied the score in the second. With one out, Jabco singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a Bison throwing error.

Michael Moyer was the tough-luck loser, pitching a six-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks.

\”I hate to waste a well-pitched game like we got out of Moyer,\” Lansberry said. \”He handled the top of their order, and that\’s a good hitting lineup, too. Year in and year out, they hit the ball well.

\”It\’s a tough loss for everybody. It\’s frustrating.\”

The Bisons will host West Branch Monday and State College Tuesday before going to Huntingdon Thursday.
