Lady Tide Sweep Lady Rams 15-0, 16-0

CURWENSVILLE – On a very cool spring afternoon the Curwensville Lady Tide softball team extended their winning streak by two. The Lady Tide took a doubleheader from visiting Johnsonburg Wednesday afternoon by way of the shutout, 15-0 and 16-0, to run their current winning streak to nine. Curwensville’s last defeat was at the hands of Clearfield, 5-1, on April 9th.

After the doubleheader explosion the Lady Tide are 10-1.

Neither game saw the fifth inning as the Tide had 13 run innings in both games. In the first tussle Curwensville scored 13 in the second inning. In the nightcap the Tide put another 13 on the board in the first.

Holly Lansberry threw a four inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the opener to give the junior a 9-1 mark for 2008 in game one. In the second game it was Shannon McDonald unloading two first inning home runs to pace the Lady Tide.

The second inning outburst for Curwensville was highlighted by four extra base hits. Shannon McDonald’s triple drove in three runs while Ashley Demchak and Lauren McKeown each had two hits in the inning. Demchak had a double and three RBI’s while McKeown, also stroking a double, brought home four teammates. Sara Clark smacked a double, as well, in the explosive second inning, for the victorious Lady Tide.

In all the Tide stroked 10 hits, with Demchak leading the way with three base hits.

In picking up their ninth win of the year head coach Allen Leigey said afterwards, “We are continuing to hit very well, which really takes the pressure off of our pitching and defense. I was very happy for Lauren (McKeown) who really swung a hot bat. That was great to see.”

In the nightcap it was the Shannon McDonald power show. The Lady Tide junior shortstop unloaded in the first inning with two home runs. Both blasts cleared the left center field fence with land to spare. The first shot was a three run dinger. The second was a two run shot. When the smoke settled McDonald picked up 5 RBI’s in the first inning and the Lady Tide were on their way to a sweep.

McDonald and Holly Lansberry ended the second game with three hits each. Jenessa Stiles and Morgan Peterman chipped in with two each of their own. Lansberry and Stiles belted doubles as Curwensville picked up 14 hits in just two innings.

Stacey Johnson started game two in the circle for the Lady Tide and went 1 and 1/3 innings before giving way to a hip injury. Erin Bressler, who came in relief, picked up the win, her first of the year.

The only hit on the day for the Lady Rams was from their third baseman, J. Myers. Myers picked up a harmless single in the second inning of game two.

Coach Leigey was obviously impress with McDonald, “Shannon just unloaded in the first inning with those two homers. They cleared left center by plenty. That certainly took any life out of Johnsonburg.” Then Leigey added, “Morgan Peterman had two nice hits. She scored two and drove in two, so I was glad for her. It was a nice performance.”

The Lady Tide don’t get a lot of rest as they visit Glendale for a 4:30 pm Thursday game in a Moshannon Valley League (MVL) contest. Should the Lady Tide win against the Lady Vikings they would clinch the 2008 MVL Championship. Curwensville sits on top of the MVL with a 3-0 record.
