BROOKVILLE – Another big win for the Curwensville High School baseball team is in the books for 2008.
This time the entry reads “Brookville.” With an impressive 10-3 road win Monday, the Golden Tide jump to 8-2 on the season. The two squads split last year, with the Tide winning game one, 1-0 and the Raiders game two, 8-0.
The Tide had a quick 3-0 lead after they batted in the top half of the first inning. Brookville though, decided to make an early game of it, at least for awhile anyway, as they scored 2 in their half of the first. Curwensville stretched the margin to 4-2 after two complete innings. Then came the top half of the fifth for the Golden Tide offense.
Six singles, a double and a walk helped produce six runs for Curwensville in the fifth. That ended any chances of a Brookville comeback. Ben McGary had a two run double in the stanza for the Tide. The six singles came courtesy of the following: Brett McCracken, Brett Sutika, Wes McGarry, Sam Gardner, Mark Dell’Antonio and Jed Greslick. The walk was picked up by Cory Bloom.
The Tide had a total of twelve hits on the afternoon, but the seven they picked up in the fifth were certainly not wasted. It enabled starting pitcher McGary to relax and pick up the win. The Tide junior is now 4-1 on the year.
Ryan Briskar, Tide head coach spoke of his ace, “Ben (McGary) is just one of those guys that gives you his all, each and every time out. He was in complete control today (Monday) especially after the first inning.” Briskar also spoke of two other players that made the win possible, “Brett McCracken just simply played a great all-around game, both at the plate and in the field. And Brett Sutika was tough at the plate as well as making a great throw to the plate from short right field to gun down a Brookville runner.”
The Golden Tide had four players with two hits apiece in Dell’Antonio, Greslick, McCracken and Sutika.
McCracken pitched the seventh inning for Curwensville and promptly struck out the side to end the game.
The Tide are now off until Wednesday when they travel to St. Mary’s to meet up with Elk County Catholic in a game that is scheduled to start at 4 :15 pm. Back on April 14th the Crusaders came to Curwensville and shut out the Tide, 2-0.
