Abandoned Mine Near Hawk Run to be Reclaimed

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Clearfield County said a mine near Hawk Run abandoned more than 60 years ago will be reclaimed at no cost to taxpayers.

“Whitetail Contracting of Woodland was awarded the reclamation contract in return for its recovery of about 10,000 tons of coal reserves,” George said. “The former Morrisdale Coal Company site, abandoned in the 1940s, will be regraded close to original contours.”

The 29.3-acre site just north of Hawk Run in Morris Township includes 6.8 acres of deep-mine subsidence and 2,550 feet of dangerous highwall. The state Department of Environmental Protection’s Moshannon District Office, which awarded the contract, stipulated that no blasting or reprocessing of coal refuse will be permitted at the site.

About 25 tons of lime per acre will be applied to the mining area, which is in the Emigh Run, Moshannon Creek and Upper West Branch watersheds.
