March 1 Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter Red Cross Notes

CLEARFIELD – American Red Cross Blood Services urges strong donor turnout to help reverse weather-related collection losses.

Winter storms are the major factor in February’s donation total being 1343 units below forecast. True to poet Robert Burns’ quote about best-laid plans, the solid February blood collection schedule assembled by the Greater Alleghenies Region of American Red Cross Blood Services continues to “go awry” under the weight of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

We’ve experienced 19 blood drive cancellations, representing the potential of 835 blood donations, which is close to our weekday blood collection goal. In addition, drives that we have conducted in areas experiencing wintry weather have experienced low donor turnout.

As a result, our month-to-date collections stand at just 90.8 percent of goal and supplies of five blood types are currently at or below a day’s supply.

These blood types are: O negative, O positive, B negative, B positive and A negative.

To donate blood, individuals: Must be at least 17 years old (16 years old in Maryland and Pennsylvania with parental consent), Weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health.

To schedule a blood donation appointment where available, visit www.redcrosslife.org or call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543).
