Library Announces Changes to Poetry Contest

CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library are pleased to announce the annual youth poetry contest, which began on Feb. 1 for area youth in the Clearfield Area School District, including St. Francis, Clearfield Missionary Alliance, and those that are home schooled.

This year for the first time, the library will offer a junior and senior division. Youth that are in grades first through fifth will comprise the junior category and those in grades 6th through 12th will makeup the senior division. The deadline for submitting poems is March 22 at 5 P.M.

Students wishing to enter either division are to write an original one-page poem on any subject that they wish. Poems may be either handwritten or computer generated, but must be on an 8 ½ x 11 inch paper. Participants also need to submit their name, age, address, phone number, grade and school on a separate piece of paper. Additionally, all poems must have a title.

The objective of the contest is to promote creative writing and an appreciation for the written word. The entries will be judged by a panel of three individuals and one winning poem per grade level will be selected. Each winner in the junior division will be notified by mail and a reception honoring the winning poets will be held in the latter part of April, which is National Poetry Month. The library will hold a Poetry Slam for the senior participants and details will be released at a later date.

For more information and a complete set of contest guidelines is available at the library. For those needing more information, please call the library at 765-3271.

The Shaw Public Library is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
