Clearfield Borough Police Chief Issues Scam Alert

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Police Chief Jeff Rhone issued a warning about a scam that is approaching the area.

“It is spreading fast, so be prepared should you get a telephone call in which the caller claims to be a jury co-coordinator and says that you are subject to arrest for having failed to appear for jury duty,” said Rhone.

He added that if you protest that you never received a notice, the scammer asks for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant.

“If you give out any of this information, your identity may just have been stolen,” warned Rhone.

The chief said the fraud has been reproted in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois and Colorado.

“This swindle is particularly insidious because they use intimidation to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court systems,” said Rhone.
