Central Mountain Tops Lady Bisons 61-28 to Stay Undefeated

CLEARFIELD — It took Central Mountain over three minutes to get their first points Monday night against Clearfield. However, once the unbeaten Lady Wildcats started to find the bucket they didn’t stop until they rang up 61 on the evening. With all those points the visitors dumped the Lady Bisons of Clearfield 61-28 to run their perfect record to 18-0. Clearfield is now 5-14 and have one win in their last eleven games.

Central Mountain jumped out to an 11-0 margin before Clearfield’s Jayme Ryan hit a three pointer late in the first quarter. That would be all the Lady Bisons would put on the board in the opening stanza. Taking a 12-3 lead into the second eight minutes the Lady Wildcats did a number on their hosts as they outscored the Bisons 21-5 to go into the locker room with halftime bulge of 33 to 8.

The Lady Bisons did put 20 second half points on the scoreboard while Central Mountain added 28 to their total. Just like the first half though, Central Mountain was tenacious on the boards and usually limited Clearfield to one shot on most of the Lady Bisons offensive possessions. The Bisons best period was the last one as they scored 14, half of their total on the night. Many of those came when Central Mountain head coach Mike Gentzel finally emptied his bench after the 40 point “Mercy Rule” went into effect.

Three starters scored in double figures for the Lady Wildcats with their leading scorer Mallory Moore paving the way with 17. Courtney Walsh had 14 and Emily Williams dropped in 13 to help out Moore. Clearfield was paced by sophomore Jayme Ryan with 11. Ryan had three treys for the Lady Bisons in one of their bright spots on the night. Amber Byerly chipped in with eight for Clearfield.

Central Mountain also won the junior varsity game by a score of 40-25.

Clearfield coach Joey Castagnolo and his squad travel to St. Mary’s on Wednesday night to battle Elk County Catholic. The Lady Crusaders beat Clearfield in early December 66-52 on the Bisons home court. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity immediately following.

NOTE: The Clearfield boys squad will entertain Elk County Catholic Tuesday night at Clearfield High School in what should be a great match-up. The Bisons come in with a 16-4 record while the Crusaders have a 16-3 mark. Clearfield lost at Elk County on January 10 55-46. JV’s start at 6 pm with the varsity action to follow.
