Keeping our families safe and warm during the cold winter weather is always a top priority. A recent poll conducted for the Red Cross found that almost half of us will use heating alternatives that can make our families more susceptible to home fires such as space heaters, fireplaces, or wood or coal stoves to fight the chill. If you plan to use an alternative heating source, the Red Cross urges you to take some steps to keep your family safe while keeping them warm.
To prevent heating related fires, the Red Cross recommends keeping all potential fuel sources, including newspapers, matches, bedding and clothing, at least three feet away from heat sources such as a space heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves. In addition, portable heaters and fireplaces should never be left unattended.
Every home needs two important things: working smoke alarms on every level of your home and a fire escape plan so that every family member, including younger and older family members, knows how to get out of harm’s way quickly. Your plan should identify at least two exits from every room and a family meeting place located a safe distance from your home.
Nationally, the number of home fires are on the rise. Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter Red Cross responded to 31 fires last year assisting 62 adults and 29 children, a number we would like to bring down. For more information on how you can help keep our community fire free, visit www.redcross.org/homefires.
