Hyde– When Clearfield and Curwensville take each other on in any sport you can always expect a large crowd, but Friday night when these two cross town rivals tangled if you moved you lost your seat. The Bisons got a huge boost from their large home crowd, especially the student section \”The Clearfield Crazies\”, to help cruise to a 70-50 victory.
The first quarter took off just were the last meeting, a 49-48 victory in favor on the Bisons, left off. The Bisons came out on fire going up 9-2 just minutes into the quarter, but the scrappy Golden Tide clawed their way back to an even score with baskets by David Kalgren. Kalgren would fuel the Tide\’s offense the entire night by scoring a game high 19 points.
\”David (Kalgren) is a slasher, he\’s really good at getting to the basket and getting off tough shots. Against a team that plays a zone defense like Clearfields you have to be able to get in the seams and get to the basket, and he was able to do that, \” commented coach Matt Wassil on the play of his junior guard.
The Bisons would force numerous turnovers in the first quarter and get a basket by Nate Greenland as the first quarter ended to go up 19-14.
In the second quarter the Bisons would start to steal the game away as they would continue to knock down almost every open look they got. As for the Tide, they would continue to struggle taking care of the ball and hitting open looks. The Bisons would use stellar play by their two big men Todd Hryn and Drew Hipps who would net a combined 10 of the 17 points scored in the quarter by the Bisons as they would head into the half up 36-23.
\”Todd and Drew played very well tonight. This was probobally their two best games and the first time they\’ve played well together. Drew scored just about everytime the ball was in his hands, and Todd was able to get all of our fast breaks going with solid rebounds, \” said Clearfield\’s coach Campman.
In the third quarter Curwensville was able to slow down the Clearfield fastbreak and force most of Clearfield\’s 11 turnovers in the frame. The Golden Tide would get clutch baskets from Kalgren, Ryan Gardner, Sam Gardner, and Jed Greslick in the quarter. The Tide perhaps would have had a even better chance at clawing their way back if it weren\’t for the loss of their big man Joey Palmer who sat out the second half with an injury. The Bisons lead 47-36 at the end of the third period.
\”Losing Joey in the second half really hurt us rebounding wise. We are already a small team to begin with and when your tallest starter goes down it really hurts you,\” said Wassil.
For the second straight game the Bisons would use the first few minutes of the fourth quarter as their springboard to seal the game. Parker Herrington would all but take over the fourth quarter to lead the home team to a win. Herrington would score 10 points in the quarter.
\”Parker is playing reall well for us, tonight he stepped up and made plays. Our guards in general played well. Even though Jarrin (Campman) didn\’t put up many points he played a great floor game and grabbed a bunch of rebounds. David Ryan played unbelievable for us at the guard position off the bench. He was able to score some baskets, force a few steals, and play great on defense,\” commented Campman on the play of his guards.
The Bisons were able to throw the troops at the Golden Tide as nine Bisons saw significant playing time Fiday night including, Nate Greenland, Joel Fox, Cruise Kerr, and David Ryan.
\”Our bench played great again tonight, at one point we had four reserves in the game and were able to continue to build the lead. We were able to play nine guys as to where they (Curwensville) only played seven. We just were able to wear them down,\” said Campman.
The Bisons will be back in action Monday when they travel to Ridgway.
The Tide will travel to Harmony on Tuesday.
