CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Conservation District wants to know what county residents know about abandoned mine drainage.
The CCCD recently began running a survey on GantDaily. That social marketing survey will run for one month and the data on that survey will help the CCCD identify what residents know about the issue, how they learned about it, and what they may be willing to do about it.
Rachel Kester, watershed technician for the CCCD, said the project is funded through the Environmental Protection Agency. The project is a pilot for Region 3, and is the only one of its kind in the state to focus on AMD. Other EPA projects in the state revolve around storm water runoff and urban issues.
The project is specifically targeting residents in the Anderson, Montgomery and Hartshorn Creek watershed areas, though Kester said they would like to hear from residents outside those areas as well.
After the data is compiled, Jack Wilbur, the Utah NPS information and education coordinator, will go through the data and tell the CCCD what it means. This includes focus groups, a phone survey of a random sampling of residents in the three watershed areas and the implementation of a marketing strategy.
One of the main goals behind this, according to Kester, is to increase volunteerism and monetary donations for AMD cleanup.
