The holidays are winding down. Christmas came and went and New Years Eve is almost upon us.

While some might think the holidays would slow down the gears of news, not so. This last week the Clearfield County Commissioners passed the county’s 2008 budget, as did Curwensville Borough Council, both with different consequences.

The Curwensville Lake soccer fields were vandalized, and a number of people were scheduled for court on a variety of topics.

Curwensville Borough Council Approves 2008 Budget, More Layoffs

CURWENSVILLE – Making a difficult decision for the new year Curwensville Borough Council voted unanimously to lay off their entire maintenance crew effective Dec. 31. Employees will be called back on an as needed basis pending storm cleanup, maintenance or other needs that arise until spring of 2008 when regular duties are likely to resume.

Councilman Ronald Kuhn commented, “This will help balance the budget.”

Clearfield County Commissioners Approve 2008 Budget

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners approved a balanced budget for 2008 at a special meeting on Thursday.

When the preliminary budget was originally unveiled it had a deficit of around $1.7 million.

“The financial condition of Clearfield County is very, very solid,” said Rex Read, commissioner chairman.

Man Accused of Threatening Police Officers with Skinning Knife Waives Hearing

CLEARFIELD – A Lock Haven man accused of threatening police officers with a skinning knife waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Anthony Werman of Lock Haven is charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit homicide, four counts of aggravated assault, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of terroristic threats, resisting arrest, 12 counts of disorderly conduct, 12 counts of harassment and stalking and two counts of simple assault. Werman also waived his right to a preliminary hearing on separate charges of simple assault and harassment.

Curwensville Man Waives Hearing on Assault Charges

CLEARFIELD – A Curwensville man accused of assaulting a number of people outside of the Smokehouse early Sunday morning waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Brooks Collins, 22, is charged with six counts of harassment and three counts of simple assault.

Former Curwensville Insurance Agent has Hearing Continued

CLEARFIELD – A former Curwensville insurance agent had his preliminary hearing continued.

William M. Elensky, Jr., 34 of Ebensburg. Elensky is the former owner of Elensky Insurance Agency, located in Curwensville. The Attorney General’s Insurance Fraud Section filed criminal charges against him, accusing him of stealing more than $91,000 in annuity and insurance monies from clients and businesses.

According to a previous release from the Attorney General’s office, Elensky, between August 2004 and July 2006, took payments from numerous individuals and businesses to be used in establishing annuity policies or purchasing liability and workers’ compensation coverage. Elensky created fictitious insurance documents for individuals and businesses and redirected $ 91,000 in annuity and insurance monies for his own use.

Curwensville Lake Soccer Fields Vandalized

CURWENSVILLE – State police in Clearfield reported that someone vandalized the soccer fields at Curwensville Lake.

According to police the incidents happened between Dec. 20 and Wednesday. Someone drove onto the field with a small truck or SUV and drove in circles. The vehicle also struck a tree and stop sign. The suspect vehicle could have damage to its left front, left side.

The suspects also stole the stop sign they hit, according to police.

Osceola Mills Man Arrested After Thursday Incident

OSCEOLA MILLS – An Osceola Mills man was arrested after allegedly breaking into a woman’s home and threatening her life.

State police in Philipsburg reported that James Clair VanValkenburg, 46, was throwing snowballs at the woman’s home. She told him to leave and shortly afterward he reportedly kicked open a door to the basement. Police said that he pulled the telephone off of its cord and went upstairs to the woman’s bedroom.
