Shiner Fuels Win Over Johnsonburg

Johnsonburg—Clearfield, for the first time this season, was able to play every player on their varsity roster in their win over Johnsonburg Thursday night.  The Bisons were able to get another monster game out of scoring machine Matt Shiner.  The junior Bison forward was able to net 29 points on the night.  Shiner was hot from the start scoring the first 5 points for the Bisons.  Shiner’s hot start didn’t however translate into a hot start for his teammates as the Bisons trailed 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.  That would be the last time the Bisons would trail as they went on a 12-2 run to start the second quarter, and outscored the Rams 25-8 in the second frame to bring the score 34-22 at the half.  The second quarter run was sparked by Shiner, Hryn, and Campman who were all able to hit three pointers in the quarter.

Clearfield has recently made a habit of scoring in bunches and stringing together runs during games and this was shown tonight when they were able to go on runs of 12-2, 13-6, and 12-0.  Coach Campman attributes the ability to put together runs having to do with their hot shooting, “we got hot shooting tonight; when we shoot the ball well it helps cover up our mistakes. Once we get momentum going we start to shoot the ball well.  You are able to go on runs by limiting the opponents second chance opportunities, and we’ve been doing that well.”

Clearfield came out just as hot in the second half outscoring the Rams 16-7 in the third quarter going up 50-29 heading into the final period.  Shiner once again fueled the quarters scoring netting another 8 points.

Johnsonburg made a late push in the fourth quarter against the Bison’s reserve players, but fell short, but were able to get a strong showing out of Seth Streich who scored 25 points in the contest. But even with the late push Clearfield came out victorious in the end with a 60-47 victory.

Though Shiner led the way for the Bisons scoring 29 points in the game he wasn’t the only player to contribute.  Clearfield also got key baskets from Todd Hryn, Jarrin Campman, Parker Herrington, and Nathan Greenland.  The Bisons also got a dominated defensive effort from center Drew Hipps who out rebounded the Rams all night.

“Drew probably played his best game of the year even though he didn’t score. He was able to control the boards.  Parker also played well tonight, he struggled the first few games but is playing to his ablity now.  Parker is probably the key component to why we are playing well right now,” commented Campman on the play of his point guard and center.

Clearfield will be back in action again December 26th when they travel to Purchase Line for their annual Lions Club Holiday Tournament.
