Lady Bisons Drop 3rd Straight, 33-30 at Brookville

BROOKVILLE – The Clearfield Lady Bisons held the Brookville Lady Raiders to a season defensive low of 33 points Friday night. However, the Lady Bisons themselves scored a season low 30 points to drop their third straight 33-30 at Brookville.

In a bizarre final quarter, 11 total points were scored, all by the way of free throws, seven for the Lady Raiders and four for the Lady Bisons. Janelle Mescall , off the bench for Brookville, hit two free throws with 54 seconds left to give her team a two point edge 32-30. Those two proved to be the winning points with Brynna Hetrick hitting one more charity toss to set the final score.

Clearfield played the game without leading scorer Jayme Ryan (12 ppg) in uniform. Brookville welcomed back Hetrick who missed two games with a concussion. Those two story lines pretty much tell it all as Clearfield missed Ryan’s offense and Brookville thrived on Hetrick who led all scorers with 13.

The Lady Bisons took an 8-7 first quarter edge thanks to six points by Annie Janocko. The Lady Raiders then held Clearfield to four second quarter points while putting eight on the board to go up 15-12 at the half. Hetrick with 8 and Castle Morgan with 6 paved the way for Brookville in the first half.

Head coach Joey Castagnolo got the Clearfield girls going in the third as they hit for 14 while Brookville put in 11. This time Madison Sopic paced Clearfield with six in the opening period of the second half as the teams were deadlocked at 26 all going into the final eight minutes.

Only Alanna Luzier and Amber Byerly scored two free throws each in the final frame for Clearfield. Brookville had four girls hit free throws including the game winners by Mescall. On the night Clearfield made 7 of 13 from the line and Brookville 11 for 24. The Lady Raiders remarkably had only two 2 point field goals on the evening while hitting on six three’s.

Brookville improves to 2 and 4 on the season while Clearfield drops below .500 at 3 and 4. The Lady Bisons try to stop their three game skid as they travel Monday night to Curwensville to face the Lady Tide. Clearfield beat Curwensville 41-36 back on December 5 at Clearfield.

The Lady Bisons also lost a very low scoring JV game to Brookville 21-14.
