LT Police Arrest Man for Possessing Heroin
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Police Department, working with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General Drug Task Force arrested a man for possession with intent to deliver heroin after a traffic stop.
Larry C. Wallace of Lower Burrell was charged for being in possession of 28 bags of heroin and numerous items of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland and is in Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $100,000.

Man’s Name Released from Fatal Accident Reported on I-80
UNION TOWNSHIP – The name of a Tunkhannock man who died as a result of an accident on Interstate 80 was released by police.
Police reported on Thursday that accident on I-80 claimed the life of a 27-year-old Tunkhannock man on Wednesday afternoon.

Conklin Introduces Tax Deduction to Ease Toll Burden
STATE COLLEGE – With plans moving forward to convert Interstate 80 into a toll road, Centre County state Rep. Scott Conklin has offered a proposal to help ease the impact that I-80 tolls would have on Pennsylvania residents.
During a news conference held today in State College, Conklin announced he has introduced a bill that would reduce the financial burden that tolling I-80 would have on Pennsylvania drivers by providing a tax credit of up to $500 for state residents using the E-ZPass electronic tolling system. The bill would allow state residents to subtract the cost of E-ZPass tolls from their gross income when filing out their state tax return.

Lock Haven Man Charged with Assaulting Officers with Skinning Knife
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Borough Police Department has released the name of the man accused of attempting to assault officers with a knife on Turnpike Avenue on Sunday night.
Anthony Werman, 28 of Lock Haven, is charged with criminal attempt to commit homicide on a police officer, aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering other people, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Commissioners to Send Letter to Fed, ‘Say No to Tolling I-80’
CLEARFIELD – After Clearfield County Commissioner Mark McCracken briefed his fellow commissioners on an Interstate 80 tolling symposium he attended, the board of commissioners voted to send a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation asking them to turn down a request to toll I-80.
McCracken said the symposium in Clarion featured state representatives and Congressional representatives, as well as business owners, local elected officials and concerned citizens.
He said that the resounding message is that Act 44 is very flawed legislation.

Clearfield County Commissioners Hear from Bio-Refinery Rep.
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners heard from a representative from SWAN Biomass at their meeting on Tuesday.
SWAN recently received $2 million to develop a biomass conversion center in Clearfield to support the emerging biofuels industry in Pennsylvania.
The $2 million funding authorization through the state Department of Community and Economic Development’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program was made possible through a Capital Budget request submitted by state Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 Clearfield County, last year.

Five Area Recreational Projects to Share $157,000 in Grants
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Clearfield County announced that more than $157,000 in state grants have been approved for recreational projects in the area.
“The quality-of-life improvements are possible through various funding sources, including the Growing Greener II bond issue that voters approved overwhelmingly in May 2005,” said George, chairman of the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. “Pennsylvania not only is cleaning polluted sites but investing in communities for future generations.”

Proposed County Budget Shows Deficit
CLEARFIELD – As of now, Clearfield County government’s 2008 budget shows a deficit.
The commissioners discussed the budget before approving the tentative budget.
The budget shows expenses of $24,142,158 and revenues of $22,386,593, with a deficit of $1,755,564.
Rex Read, chairman commissioner, noted that there have already been suggestions on how to reduce that deficit. He also added that the county has adequate resources to cover the deficit if need be.

Clearfield School Board Reorganizes
Clearfield – Holding its post-election reorganization meeting the Clearfield Area School Board of Directors administered the Oath of Office to its newly elected and reelected members Susan E. Mikesell, Philip E. Carr, David S. Glass, Tim Morgan and Larry A. Putt.
Morgan noted that in primaries he was elected to the ballot for both the two-year and four-year term. In the election Morgan was voted into both positions. Noting that he can not accept both positions Morgan declined accepting the two year position and has accepted the four-year term with the board.

Sandy Township to Hold Public Hearing Regarding Surface Mining Operation
DUBOIS – The Sandy Township Supervisors approved holding a public hearing to get public input on a coal company’s plans to surface mine in the township.
Amerikohl Mining Inc. wants to mine within 100 feet of West Long Avenue, Larkeytown Road and Wayne Road. It is proposed that that the coal company will only be allowed to haul on Larkeytown Road.
