Sandy Township to Hold Public Hearing Regarding Surface Mining Operation

DUBOIS – The Sandy Township Supervisors approved holding a public hearing to get public input on a coal company’s plans to surface mine in the township.

Amerikohl Mining Inc. wants to mine within 100 feet of West Long Avenue, Larkeytown Road and Wayne Road. It is proposed that that the coal company will only be allowed to haul on Larkeytown Road.

The project will take place on 500 acres of land within Clearfield and Jefferson Counties. Township Manager Dick Castonguay said that the township needs to consider signage issues with the proposed mining project.

“There’s some new wrinkles,” said Castonguay about signage and zoning.

The special meeting is scheduled for Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
