Over 2,000 Clearfield County Residents Still Eligible for Property Tax/Rent Rebates

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Clearfield County, said more than 2,000 eligible Clearfield County residents still have not applied for the 2006 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program that offers rebates of up to $650.

“The state Revenue Department estimates that 2,191 county residents – or almost 30 percent of those eligible – had not applied for the program as of October 29,” George said. “The deadline to apply is December 31, and both the income guidelines and benefits have been expanded significantly.”

Claimants or spouses 65 or older, widows or widowers 50 or older; and the permanently disabled 18 or older may qualify for expanded benefits. The income limit for homeowners has been more than doubled to $35,000 a year, excluding half of Social Security or Railroad Tier 1 benefits. Household income for renters cannot be more than $15,000.

Applications are available online or by calling George’s district and Harrisburg offices toll free at 866-523-5279 or 866-354-0890, respectively. Applications also are available from the Revenue Department by calling 888-222-9190 toll free between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on normal week days.

“Under legislation approved by the General Assembly last year, an additional 420,000 seniors in Pennsylvania are eligible this year to receive help paying their property taxes or rent,” George said. “More than 2,500 Clearfield County homeowners are projected to be eligible to have all school property taxes rebated through the program
