CLEARFIELD – The Cherry Tree man who escaped from the Clearfield County Jail Sunday afternoon was taken into custody without incident Sunday night.
Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. spoke with GantDaily by telephone Sunday night and said Ronald James Beltowski, 19, was apprehended through negotiation at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Stifflertown Road in Cherry Tree. Shaw said Beltowski was taken into custody without incident.
Beltowski is accused of escaping from inside the Clearfield County Jail at 2:30 p.m.
A manhunt ensued with about 75 people participating in the search.
As of 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Shaw said Beltowski was being examined at Miner’s Hospital in Hastings.
Shaw said negotiations took place with Beltowski via a cell phone Beltowski obtained. The circumstances surrounding how he took possession of the phone were unknown as of posting time.
“He made contact with a cell phone, and we were able to communicate with him through that phone,” Shaw said.
Beltowski was being held in the county jail as the result of a criminal complaint filed Sept. 5 by Trooper Mark Rorabaugh of the Pennsylvania State Police, Punxsutawney, charging Beltowski with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
