The News Team was on the road this last week to Shanksville to bring you coverage of the memorial services of the Sept. 11 Flight 93 disaster.

That didn’t keep the News Team from bringing you your regular dose of online news.

This last week a West Decatur man was sentenced to state prison for a vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, Cleafield Borough made some moves to help some local businesses, an armed robbery occurred in the Philipsburg area and a former state trooper accused of soliciting sexual favors waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

America Remembers: Shanksville Six Years Later

SHANKSVILLE – Through the rain, hundreds made the sixth annual pilgrimage to the impact site of United Airlines Flight 93 Tuesday.

The temporary memorial still stands, a tribute to the 40 people who were aboard the plane when it crashed into a field near Shanksville.

This year marked a change in events, with the formal commemorative ceremony the day prior to the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Still, the morning saw a near-endless parade of those who visited the temporary memorial, which is under the direction of the National Park Service.

Flight 93 Heroes Remembered

SHANKSVILLE – The Thunder Bell rang 40 times Tuesday, once for each person who lost their life in the Flight 93 disaster.

United Airlines Flight 93 was one of the planes to crash on Sept. 11, 2001, in a terrorist strike against the United States. The passengers of Flight 93 fought back, and the plane crashed into a field on the outskirts of Shanksville.

People of all ages attended the service at the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville to commemorate those brave men and women. The North Star Kids, a singing troupe from Pittsburgh, sang patriotic and religious songs throughout the service to mark the fifth year the group performed at the ceremony and the sixth anniversary of 9-11.

Commemorative Cancellation Mark Offered at Shanksville Post Office

SHANKSVILLE – A special pictorial cancellation is being offered through October to commemorate those who died aboard Flight 93 when it crashed in Shanksville, Somerset County, on Sept. 11, 2001.

This year’s mark, the fifth time the U.S. Postal service has offered the stamp, features the Flight 93 Thunder Bell.

SHANKSVILLE – Shortly after the Flight 93 disaster in Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001, the Rev. A.T. Mashcerino had a dream to build a memorial to honor those who sacrificed their lives in that disaster.

At the memorial service for those 40 people Tuesday, Mascherino discussed his dream and one very important part of it: The Thunder Bell.

Clearfield Hosts 9-11 Remembrance at Driving Park

CLEARFIELD – “We can never forget what happened that day. That day they saw an angel cry,” said chaplain Gary Jewart before reciting the poem that explained the angel crying was the rescue workers at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Afterward, a bell was tolled in remembrance for those lost.

On Tuesday night the Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department hosted a ceremony to remember those whose lives were lost in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Representatives of fire departments, emergency services and police from Clearfield, Goshen, Hyde, Curwensville, Glen Richey and Karthaus participated in ceremony. Guest speakers included state Rep. Camile “Bud” George, Clearfield Borough Mayor Patty Gilliland, the Rev. Rodger Gorton, CLP and Fire Chaplain Gary Jewart, police officer Dan Farley, Terry Wigfield and Sue Lanich who sat on a stage with two fire engines supporting a flag between their buckets.

Former State Trooper Accused of Soliciting Sexual Favors Waives Hearing

CLEARFIELD – A former state trooper out of Clearfield accused of soliciting sexual favors waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Monday.

Charles Butler III of Philipsburg was originally scheduled to have a hearing on Friday. Butler is charged with unlawful use of a computer, five counts of bribery in official and political matters, six counts of stalking, five counts of official oppression, one count of indecent assault and 10 counts of harassment. The criminal complaint alleges that the incidents happened between 2002 and 2006.

West Decatur Man Found Guilty of Vehicular Homicide While DUI Sentenced to State Prison

CLEARFIELD – A West Decatur man found guilty homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence was sentenced to state prison on Monday.

He was previously found guilty by Clearfield County President Judge Fredric J. Ammerman.

CCIDA Grants Zero-Interest Loan to GIDA

CLEARFIELD – The Glendale Industrial Development Authority will receive a zero-interest loan to develop a revolving loan fund for community improvements in Coalport and Irvona boroughs and Beccaria Township.

GIDA had asked the Clearfield County Industrial Development Authority for a $25,000 grant to fund the project, but the authority board opted to loan the money instead. Authority Member Nancy Micks cast the lone nay vote to provide a $12,500 five-year zero-interest loan.

Assault in Clearfield Borough Reported

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Borough Police Department reported an assaul that occurred on Thursday around 1 a.m. at a South Second Street address.

When police arrived the person responsible had fled the scene. The alleged victim, unnamed, was transported to Clearfield Hospital then airlifted to Altoona Regional for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

Clearfield Borough Makes Way for Business

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council voted to approve two ordinances at Thursday’s special meeting, both of which will aid in business development within the borough.

The first closed and vacated an unnamed alley between the J.J. Powell building on Bridge Street and the former Charles Heating Building. This will allow for the development of a new Rite Aid on the site.

Armed Robbery Reported at Philipsburg Convenience Store

PHILIPSBURG – The Minit Mart in Philipsburg Borough, Centre County, was robbed early Tuesday morning.

State police at Philipsburg report that at about 12:23 a.m., a white male who was about 6 feet tall entered the store and showed what the clerk believes was a knife.

Curwensville Hears From Sunnyside Ethanol Representatives

Curwensville – Representatives from Sunnyside Ethanol were in attendance at the September meeting of Curwensville Borough Council.

The project is currently waiting for financial matters to settle. Jose Cranston, Sunnyside representative, announced that they expect a ground-breaking in the first quarter of 2008.
