UPDATE: Cigarette Ruled Likely Cause of Domino’s Fire

CLEARFIELD – A fire that started at Domino’s Pizza in Clearfield Wednesday afternoon was likely started by a lit cigarette.

The news comes after an investigation into the 3 p.m. call was completed.

Clearfield Borough Fire Chief Brett Owens said the fire began on the back of the building, which sits along South Second Street. Owens said the fire started on the inside of the exterior wall.

“To me, that’s a sign of arson,” he said.

Investigators did not say the fire was purposely set, but Owens said that a cigarette was flicked or placed in the area, touching off a fire on the paper portion of some exposed fiberglas insulation.

Damage in the fire was limited to $500, mainly because the fire companies called to the business were able to get the situation under control quickly. In fact, Domino’s closed for only about 30 to 40 minutes while the fire was put out.

The problem was discovered shortly before 3 p.m. when employees smelled smoke. Owens said the employeees did exactly what they should have done by ensuring that everyone was out of the store and calling 9-1-1.
