Clearfield Goes 1-2 in Labor Day Wood Bat Tourney

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield American Legion Post 6 fall baseball team finished 1-2 in its season-opening Labor Day Wood Bat Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field.
 
Brookville earned the championship trophy by virtue of its 5-4 win over DuBois. The teams matched 2-1 records in the round-robin tourney. All games were six innings.
 
Clearfield handed the champs their loss in Saturday\’s opener, winner Michael Moyer and Isaac Butler combining for a three-hitter in the 9-1 victory. Moyer worked four innings.
 
David Welker drove in three runs with a pair of singles. Kyle Timchak and Aaron Sayers also had two hits apiece, while Moyer and Ben Kline added doubles.
 
Clearfield was held to three hits, two by Justin Hoffman, in a 5-2 loss to DuBois. Sayers, who was the loser, Welker and Hoffman gave up only five hits.
 
The hosts had the opportunity to make it a three-team tie for first place in the tourney finale, but Punxsutawney held on for an 8-7 win. Clearfield rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying and winning runs in scoring position when the final out was recorded.
 
Seven errors proved costly for Clearfield, as loser Butler surrendered only two earned runs in a complete game effort.
 
Sayers, Moyer and Butler each had a single and a double for Clearfield.
 
In other games, DuBois edged Punxsutawney 3-1 and Brookville topped Punxsy 5-2.
 
\”It was a pretty competitive tournament, actually,\” Clearfield manager Sid Lansberry said. \”All of the game were close except for our win over Brookville. I think the wood bats are a great equalizer. They keep the scores down.\”
 
Clearfield will play doubleheaders Saturday at home against DuBois at 11a.m. and Sunday at Bellefonte at 1 p.m.
