DuBois Business Owner asks for Change to Sign Ordinance

DUBOIS – A downtown business owner asked DuBois City Council to consider updating and changing a sign ordinance for the downtown area on Monday night.

Susan Searing, owner of the Black Thai restaurant and the soon-to-be opening House of Jazz asked that the sign ordinace be changed to help better draw attention to downtown businesses. House of Jazz is a proposed jazz club that will feature a house band throughout the week and acts from out of the area on the weekend.

“We need to modernize our ordinances,” said Searing.

Searing specifically pointed out flat signage on buildings and the difficulty for drivers to focus on them. She also stated that a signage change could help to increase the number of visitors from out of the area to downtown businesses.

Dianne Bernardo, city controller and former Main Street manager, agreed with Searing.

Council voted to move the issue on to the city planning commission to determine if the ordinance needs to be amended.
