Grandmother, Granddaughter Die as Result of Automobile Accident in Mahaffey

MAHAFFEY – A 63-year-old woman and 3-year-old child died as a result of a car accident Wednesday afternoon.

According to Punxsutawney-based state police a vehicle driven by Bobbi Jo Morgan of Patton was traveling south on state Route 36 in Mahaffey Borough. Bertha Kitchen, 63, was walking on the west berm of SR 36 pushing a her 3-year-old granddaughter in a carriage. Morgan traveled off the west side of the road for unknown reasons and her vehicle struck Kitchen and the carriage. Morgan continued to travel through a yard, across an alley and through another yard where she struck a wooden fence before coming to rest.

Debris from the fence struck an 8-year-old Mahaffey girl who was walking along the roadside.

The 8-year-old was treated at Punxsutawney Hospital for minor injuries. Morgan was not wearing her seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Punxsutawney Hospital by Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services.

Kitchen was pronounced dead at Clearfield Hospital by the Clearfield County Deputy Coroner. The infant was pronounced dead at Punxsutawney Hospital.

Morgan has not been charged. Police are continuing their investigation.
