McGary 3-hits Philipsburg in Curwensville Teener 15-16 All-stars Opener

PHILIPSBURG – The Curwensville Teener League 15-and-16 All-Stars got off to a great start in the Area VI Tournament Monday night, backing Ben McGary\’s three-hit pitching with a 16-hit attack and errorless defense for an 11-0 victory over Philipsburg-Osceola at the Powerhouse Field.

\”It was just a solid fundamental game for us,\” manager Denny Johns said. \”That\’s a big one.\”

McGary was in control all the way, striking out eight and walking none. The lefthander need only 74 pitches to complete his outstanding performance.

P-O, which was coming off a 9-2 win at Punxsutawney Sunday, had only one runner reach third base, Tim Martin via a double and a flyout in the third inning.

\”He was very efficient,\” Johns said of McGary\’s effort. \”He never went to a three-ball count. The balls they did put in play, we made the plays behind him.\”

McGary and Sam Gardner each three hits, while Jesse Hoover and Cory Bloom added two apiece.

Jed Greslick, Curwensville\’s second batter, got the offense in gear right away with a solo home run.

Hits by Nick Redden and Bloom led to a pair of runs in the second inning. Redden scored on a wild pitch and Bloom on Tyler Johns\’ single.

The visitors hiked their lead to 5-0 in the third on RBI-doubles by Gardner and Hoover.

In the sixth, a walk and hits by Andrew Star and McGary loaded the bases, and Greslick\’s forceout and Gardner\’s single pushed the spread to 7-0.

Aided by four walks and a hit batsman, Curwensville tacked on four runs in the seventh. Hoover scored from second base when Derek Dixon\’s bunt rolled through the right side for a hit, Brett Sutika singled for two ribbies and McGary singled for the final RBI.

Storm Bumbarger, the first of five P-O pitchers, was the loser.

Curwensville plays its first home game Thursday against Punxsutawney in a 5:30 start at the Curwensville Area High School Field.
