PUNXSUTAWNEY – The Clearfield Legion baseball team\’s seven-winning streak came to a screeching halt Monday night under the Kuntz Field lights.
Punxsutawney right-handers Chris Reeseman and Tommy Bush combined for a five-hitter and struck out 10 in a 10-0 shutout for the Jefferson County Legion League front-runners.
The Chiefs, who had won four JCLL games in a row, still are very much in the race for second place at 8-7.
DuBois, another team in the playoff hunt, will provide the opposition for a pair of important mid-week games. The Chiefs will be at home Wednesday and on the road Thursday.
Nick Gillung led Punxsutawney\’s hit parade against Corey Bookhamer with a two-run home run in the first inning and two doubles.
Zach Smith drove in three runs with a pair of singles, while Dustin Dubensky and Mike Smiley also had two hits apiece. One of Dubensky\’s was a solo homer.
Punxsy broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning for a 9-0 lead.
Brandon Evans relieved Bookhamer in the fifth and gave one unearned run in one inning. Justin Hoffman struck out the only two batters he faced in the sixth.
Aaron Sayers had two hits for the Chiefs, who are 15-8-1 overall.
