The GantDaily News Team split time this week between a four day murder re-trial and our other duties. We brought you continuing coverage on the Dr. Adams case and news about one municipal council member possibly suing another council member.

We also covered the sentencings of two men found guilty of drug trafficking on Interstate 80 as well as the sentencing of a multi-count sex offendor.

No new news was available on a superintendant while another school district lowered taxes.

Jury Verdict: Callahan Guilty on All Counts

CLEARFIELD – After nearly four hours of deliberation at the Clearfield County Courthouse, the jury in the Andrew Callahan trial retuned a guilty verdict on all counts.

Callahan faced charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, aggravated assault and abuse of a corpse for killing Micah Pollock in Nov. 5, 1997.

Callahan and Pollock were students at Glendale High School at the time. Pollock was 15, and Callahan was 16.

Uresti, Flores Sentenced to State Prison for Drug Trafficking

CLEARFIELD – Two men found guilty by a jury for transporting drugs through Clearfield County were sentenced to state prison on Tuesday.

Hugo Leal Flores of Mexico and Arnulfo Uresti of Texas were both sentenced to five-to-ten years in state prison for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The men were involved in a three day trial after they were arrested in October and found to be in possession of 28 kilograms of cocaine.

DuBois Man Pleads Guilty to Sex Crimes, Sentenced to State Prison

CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man who pleaded guilty to sex crimes against four different victims was sentenced to state prison on Tuesday.

Jamie Lynn Rowles, 30, was sentenced to five-to-20 years in state prison for the rape of a 19-year-old autistic woman. He is to attend sex offendor counseling, have no alcohol, submit to DNA testing and to have no contact with the victim.

Osceola Council OK’s New Building

OSCEOLA MILLS – There were a plethora of items on the agenda for Monday’s Osceola Mills Borough Council agenda including the approval of a contract for a new building.

The council approved a motion to give Tom Robertson, a local contractor, a notice of award for the construction of the new building that the council would occupy. The building, the engineering of which was overseen by Hughes Engineering of Clearfield, will be finished by Robertson, who put in the lowest bid for the contract. The decision to approve this course of action was unanimous.

The council elected to enter into an executive session for a half hour to determine whether legal action would be pursued by one council member on another. Initially, no names or details were given, but as the public session resumed, it was made clear that Vicky Smith, council member, would be filing a private suit against Bill McLaughlin, council member.

Officials Tight-Lipped about Dr. Adams Investigation; Search Warrant Detailed

PHILIPSBURG – While there are plenty of rumors swirling around the community with regard to the investigation of Dr. Larry Adams of Philipsburg, none of them are being substantiated by officials.

GantDaily contacted the Centre County Court Administrator’s office Wednesday morning, but the woman who answered the telephone there said she was ordered to direct all inquires into the Adams case to an agent from the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office.

DASD Budget Approved, Tax Payment Plan Approved

DUBOIS – The DuBois Area School District Board of Directors approved the final revision of the 2007-2008 budget on Wednesday night.

The budget is in the amount of $53,330,573. It represents a 2.40 millage decrease in Clearfield County and a .14 millage decrease in Jefferson County.

The actual millage in Clearfield County is 81.93 and in Jefferson County it is 27.66.

Man Accused of Numerous Sex Crimes Arrested

WESTOVER BOROUGH – A Northern Cambria man wanted for a number of sex crimes was arrested on Monday by Punxsutawney-based state police.

According to the report John Hugill Jr., 21, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins on 21 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, 22 counts of rape, 46 counts of aggravated indecent assault, 48 counts of indecent assault, three counts of sexual abuse of children and related charges.

No Action on Mo Valley Superintendent

AMESVILLE – After a more than two-hour executive session, the Moshannon Valley School District Board of Education took no further action on the superintendent’s administrative leave.

When entering the executive session, the board said only that the executive session was being called for personnel and contract negotiations. Members did not answer when asked in which department those to be discussed were employed.

Upon returning from the executive session, Board President Scott Magnetti explained that the session was for professional staff, support staff and administrative staff.

Crappie Tournament Draws Big Numbers

CURWENSVILLE – Anglers from around the region showed up for the third annual Alan Bloom Memorial Crappie Tournament at Curwensville Lake on Saturday. A total of 61 teams took the lake, some coming from as far as Johnstown.

The top team was awarded $2,000. That team consisted of Martin Moore of Clearfield and Jim Kyler of Curwensville. They had three fish that came in at 3.08 pounds. The second place team of A. Hebel and C. Bereradge won $1,000; the third place team of M. Hamilton and T. Hamilton won $500 and the fourth place team of F. Wallace and W. Swoope Sr. won $250. The fifth through tenth place teams each won $100.
