It was another busy week for the GantDaily News Team this last week. We brought readers stories regarding the primary election, a police officer losing his job and one municipality selling a fire hall.

A proposed drug treatment facility in DuBois was turned down by DuBois City Council, a stretch of Brady Street in DuBois will bet updated crosswalks in the future, and Boggs Township made a decision on an Act 537 plan.

Boggs Township Approves Partnership on Act 537 Plan

WEST DECATUR – Boggs Township will allow PA Waste LLC to pay for an Act 537 study for the municipality.

The decision was a unaniamous one among the supervisors and one the residents questioned.

Act 537 was enacted in 1966 and is known as the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act. Its goal is to correct existing sewage disposal problems and prevent future problems.

Clearfield County Voters Say No to Referenda

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County voters in all school districts defeated referendum questions in Tuesday’s election.

The questions varied by district, but all included a request to change the way people pay school taxes.

The shift would have placed more of the tax burden on those who earn income and less burden on those who own homes. Some people, though, would have been paying more in taxes if they earned more than the so-called “break even” point.

Fourth Ward Fire Hall Sale Approved

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council approved the sale of the Fourth Ward fire hall at their regular meeting Thursday night. The vote was unanimous.

Council opened bids during a work session on May 10 from Samuel J. Davis and Robert F. Greenland. Greenland came in with the high bid of $45,000. The sale will take time to finalize.

Houser Terminated from Employment as Lawrence Township Police Officer

CLEARFIELD – Recently-jailed police officer Matthew Houser is without a job after Tuesday night.

The Lawrence Township Supervisors voted to terminate his employment due to conduct that was unbecoming of a police officer. The termination date was effective on Tuesday night.

Crosswalks to be Modernized Along Brady Street in City of DuBois

DUBOIS – The mayor of the City of DuBois wanted to assure the public that DuBois City Council did not drop the ball. On Monday night, he delivered on that assurance.

John “Herm” Suplizio announced that after months of hard work, an agreement was reached with PennDOT to upgrade the crosswalks at Park Avenue and Brady Street, Scriber Avenue and Brady Street, Long Avenue and Brady Street, and Washington Avenue and Brady Street. The announcement came after a lengthy discussion at council’s last work session on Thursday.

Clearfield Hospital’s Armstrong Birthing Center Dedicated

CLEARFIELD – She began working at Clearfield Hospital as a teenager and became known as a legend. Now the memory of B. Ellen “Bert” Armstrong will live on through the Armstrong Birthing Center at Clearfield Hospital.

The center’s construction began in the late summer of 2006, and about a half-million dollars later, the center now boasts four labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites.

DuBois City Council Rejects RHJ Medical Center at 994 Beaver Drive

DUBOIS – After a unanimous vote by DuBois City Council, RHJ Medical Center will not be permitted to operate at 994 Beaver Drive.

The decision came at council’s regular meeting on Monday night, and after a public hearing that was held in April. At that meeting representatives from RHJ were given an opportunity to give council and the residents of DuBois area why they should be allowed to operate within 500-feet of a public park.

Update: New Information on Dr. Larry Adams Investigation

PHILIPSBURG – GantDaily has received new information from news partner Channel 6 into the investigation of Dr. Larry Adams.

According to Channel 6, items were taken from Adams’ home and office, though what those items were could not be said. Nothing has been said to indicate that the investigation has anything to do with Philipsburg Hospital.

Preliminary Count: 71 Precincts In

CLEARFIELD – With votes from 71 of Clearfield County’s 71 precincts counted, John Sobel, and Joan Robinson McMillen appear to be the front-runners for the Republican slots on the November ballot. Total unnofficial results are forthcoming.

John Sobel received 22.12-percent of the vote, J. Barry Abbott received 19.63-percent of the vote, and Joan Robinson McMillen received 21.18-percent of the vote.

Peeping Bear Captured Near Snappy’s

CLEARFIELD – A bear that has been seen frequenting the area around Snappy’s has been captured, according to the Lawrence Township Police Department.
