CLEARFIELD – A sparse crowd gathered at the Clearfield Driving Park Saturday afternoon to pay tribute to those who have served in the United States military and those who are serving now.
The Armed Forces Awareness Day celebration featured musical selections from the DuBois American Legion band as well as several speakers.
Clearfield County Commissioner Mike Lytle spoke about recognizing the contributions and committment of those who protect the United States.
“The world we live in has been and is shaped by American courage, power and wisdom,” Lytle said.
Clearfield County Commissioner Mark McCracken commented on the blue sky and sun that welcomed the ceremony, saying people are free to enjoy this day because of the armed forces.
“They make our way of life possible,” McCracken said.
Clearfield County Commissioner Rex Read called on those who are not veterans to express appreciation to those who are.
State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale, noted the sparsity of the crowd, saying, “We in this country take for granted the things others only pray for.”
Armed Forces Awareness events continue Sunday with a car show beginning at noon at the Clearfield Driving Park as well as a Chinese auction and “Cash Bash” drawing.
The events are coupled with those of Country Jamin’ the Valley, which features independent country music on the grandstand stage. Tickets are available at the gate to the park for $8 per person. Children under 12 are admitted for free. For more information on the events, visit the Country Jamin’ the Valley Web site.
