HARRISBURG – Gov. Edward G. Rendell today announced the appointment Stewart R. Cades of Carversville as a member of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
“It is a pleasure to welcome Stewart Cades to the governing body of the state arts council,” said Rendell. “With the experience and insight he has gained through leadership roles with a number of Pennsylvania’s most prestigious arts organizations, Stewart will enhance the agency’s ongoing record of achievement and foster the economic benefits Pennsylvania gains from a vital arts and cultural community.”
As council member, Cades will help the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts set the mission and goals for the agency, evaluate its progress, formulate policy and make the final decisions on the use of state funds for the agency.
Cades is the president and director of Overseas Strategic Consulting Ltd., an international consulting firm. He currently serves as chairman of the board of Porcupine Press Inc., a scholarly publishing company, and as vice president of the board of directors of the Fabric Workshop and Museum. He is a past member of the boards of the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, the Print Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Foundation for Architecture.
Cades is one of 19 PCA council members, 15 of whom are at-large members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. He has been confirmed by the state Senate and will serve a one-year term.
In addition to Gov. Rendell’s appointment of Cades, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati appointed Sen. Charles T. McIlhinney Jr. (R-Bucks) as a legislative member of the panel.

The mission of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is to foster the excellence, diversity and vitality of the arts in Pennsylvania and to broaden the availability and appreciation of those arts throughout the commonwealth. All council members serve without compensation. In 2004, the agency was named among government’s top 50 “Best and Brightest” in the Innovations in American Government Awards, a national competition recognizing superior and unique programming initiatives in the public sector.
