Health Fair Provides Wealth of Information

CLEARFIELD – Just about any type of health-related question a person could come up with could be answered at Tuesday’s fifth annual Health Expo, sponsored by Clearfield Hospital.

Booths from the new Armstrong Birthing Center at Clearfield Hospital to Colonial Courtyard and Mountain Laurel joined under one roof with booths from the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, the Silver Sneakers Program and others.

Attendance was brisk early in the day with attendees at the free event picking up literature from the many centers.

One of the exhibitors, Linda Mack of Adagio Health in Clearfield, said her office offers all types of service for women’s health and some for men, too.

For those who are uninsured, a sliding scale based upon income and number of dependents is used. Adagio also accepts many forms of health insurance.

The services provided are vast, including a free program for breast and cervical cancer screening and free pap smears or mammograms for those who qualify.

Men can also take advantage of sexually transmitted disease testing offered at the office.

Mack said many patients at the center are female and appreciate that the entire staff at the office is female as well including a female obstetrician and gynecologist.

“They like that,” she said.

The office also provides walk-in pregnancy testing, family planning services and help in adoption through The Gladney Center for Adoption.

Barb Long, a technician at the Clearfield Professional Group, was providing information on osteoporosis, a disease that deceases the density of bones.

Long noted that perhaps 90 percent of the attendees at the expo were affected and did not now it.

She said many times, a person will say, “I fell and broke my hip.” She said, in reality, the hip breaks and then they fall due to small cracks that form in the bone.

“They could just be standing and doing dishes,” Long said.

Those at risk for osteoporosis include mainly females who have been through menopause, but Long said studies have seen osteoporosis in men as well.

Another of the exhibitors at the expo was Ida Reams, safety press officer and community traffic safety project coordinator for PennDOT Engineering District 2-0.

She provided information on proper car seat choices, work zone safety, risky teen driving, tips for elderly drivers and crash scene do’s and don’ts.

Reams also had a special pamphlet that could come in handy should someone’s car be stolen.

The cardboard folder has spaces for a photograph of your car and all other information about it from the plate number to the make model and identifying marks.

“If your car is ever stolen, you have everything you need right there,” she said.

The expo ran through 3 p.m. Tuesday in Expo I at the Clearfield Driving Park. For those who missed the expo but would like more information, contact the exhibitors listed below directly.
