Commissioners Want to ‘Talk Trash’ with Harmony

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners want to meet with Harmony Area School District’s board of directors.

The commissioners sent a letter to the board requesting that a meeting be scheduled to discuss the potential impact of a landfill in Clearfield County.

“I’m a little bit concerned and alarmed that they’re going to the school district,” Mark McCracken, commissioner, said.

The letter was sent out on Friday, and as of Tuesday morning, the commissioners had not heard from the board.

Last week, Harmony’s board met with officials of North East Waste Services of Carlisle. That meeting was opened to the public, however, according to published reports, it was not advertised.

“It is kind of disturbing that companies will come into the county under the cover of darkness and select the entities they want to deal with,” said Clearfield County Commissioner Chairman Rex Read. He added that a decision made by one company or entity has the ability to impact the entire county.

Mike Lytle, commissioner, said that as laws stand, landfill companies have the ability to operate in this manner.

“Until Act 101 is either repealed or changed … DEP (the Department of Environmental Protection) has the final say. … Counties need to have some say when it comes to rejecting landfills.”

Seperately each of the commissioners said they are opposed to the landfill. Read said he did not have enough knowledge about the situation, so he would have to say he is opposed to the landfill.
