SkillsUSA Helps Life Skills Students Ring in Chinese New Year

CLEARFIELD – The Community Service Committee of SkillsUSA at the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center recently held a Chinese New Year celebration for the Life Skills students at the Clearfield Middle School.

Ten students were treated to a variety of activities which included a cyber imaging session and a cut and style makeover by the cosmetology students, an authentic Chinese meal prepared by the culinary arts students, and a hand washing lesson, demonstration and practice session presented by health assisting technology students.

The students were also treated to a lesson on the Chinese New Year and learned that it is now the Year of the Pig in the Chinese calendar.

SkillsUSA members helped each student determine which sign they are in Chinese astrology, which is based on a rotation of 12 calendar years, not 12 months as in the regular zodiac.

The students also received a demonstration on how quickly germs are spread. Papers which the students had handled had been treated with a special powder that glows in the dark. The students were not made aware of the powder until later in the demonstration, when a black light was used to show just how far the powder had spread. This demonstration was used to illustrate how quickly germs are spread by normal day-to-day contact. The students then participated in a “germ” coloring contest and received special awards after successfully completing the lesson.

SkillsUSA thanks the following individuals and business for donating items used during the celebration: Chef Greg Zafuto, Darlene Smolko and Dollar General.
