One Delinquent Hotel Files Tax with County

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County’s solicitor will not need to take legal action against at least one of the two lodging establishments that had not filed hotel tax reports last year.

Solicitor Kim Kesner reported to the commissioners at their Tuesday work session that Justin Powell, owner of Electric Avenue in Houtzdale, read a media account stating that he had not filed hotel tax reports for all of 2006. Kesner said that he also placed a courtesy call to the establishment, but Kesner said he believes it was the media coverage that pushed to go to the treasurer’s office to file the necessary paperwork.
“There are still issues on the correct amount,” Kesner said, but added that the needed steps were being taken to remedy the problem.

The other hotel that did not file taxes last year is Quality Inn in DuBois.

The facility was most recently running under the name Quality Inn.

The hotel was severely damaged by fire in January, and a courtesy call attempt by Kesner was unsuccessful. Kesner said he heard from some sources that there have been no operations at the building since the fire.

Quality Inn is only delinquent on filing paperwork for the last quarter of 2006, and Kesner said that might be because the paperwork was damaged by the fire.

Kesner sent out a plea to the management of Quality Inn through the media.

“It would be in the best interest of the Quality Inn to contact the treasurer’s office at the earliest date possible,” Kesner said, noting that interest accrues on late payments.

The county treasurer’s office can be reached at 765-2641.
