It was a busy week in Clearfield County. A lot of things happened this week that don’t normally happen in a rural county. Residents saw an abduction, a double fatal fire and secretary of the DEP visiting the county.
Clearfield County also read about gate price changes at the Clearfield County Fair, an old favorite changing hands and the possibility of new business in town.

Double Fatal Fire Reported in Bradford Township
WOODLAND – According to Mick McCracken, state police fire marshal, a double fatal fire occurred at 1637 Pine Top Road in Bradford Township on Thursday night.
McCracken said responders were called out at 6:59 p.m. A representative from the Clearfield County Emergency Management Agency said that six companies responded. These included Bigler-Jackson-Woodland, Hyde, Wallaceton, Lawrence Township Company 2 and Centre County 12. Clearfield Emergency Medical Services and Station 16 QRS.
The victims of the fire have yet to be named. They were identified by the police report as two males, however. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined as well.

Former Big K Building in Acquisition Process, Market Study Planned
CLEARFIELD – A new tenant could be on the horizon for a long-empty Lawrence Township retail building.
Donald Cafiero, president and CEO of Pennmark Management Co. LLC of Plymouth Landing, spoke with GantDaily Wednesday afternoon, saying the company is in the process of acquiring the former Big K building in the Big Lots! Plaza.
That building was vacated in 2002 as part of a large-scale downsizing by K-Mart.
Right now, Cafiero said his company is working on plans for possible renovation and re-use of the building.

WQYX-WCPA Sale Finalized, Plans Announced
CLEARFIELD – Mike McGough, district manager for First Media Radio in State College, confirmed that the sale of Clearfield-based WCPA-AM and WQYX-FM was finalized on Monday.
GantDaily originally reported on this story in October, when paperwork for the sale had been filed with the Federal Communications Commission. GantDaily has been communicating throughout the week with McGough to learn more about the future direction of the stations.

Boggs Township Man Found Guilty of Harassing Secretary
KYLERTOWN – A hearing that should have concerned with a harassment count became one of Boggs Township’s actions with relation to a proposed landfill in the municipality.
Boggs Township resident Frank Norris, 60, was before Magisterial District Judge Michael Rudella Friday morning to answer for a summary harassment count.
He was charged with calling Boggs Township Secretary/Treasurer Denise Dobo a lewd name following the municipality’s December meeting.

Fair Goes to $6 Admission, Offers Option for Non-Riders
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department Fair and Park Board has released information on its new pay-one-price gate fees for the 2007 fair.
The pay-one-price option for everyone between the ages of 4 and 65 will be charged a $6 admission at the gate, which allows admission into the fair grounds and unlimited mechanical rides, provided by Bates Bros. Amusements. Patrons over the age of 65 must show their Medicare card at the gate and will be admitted to the fair grounds at no charge.

DuBois City Council to Consider Public Hearing for Drug Treatment Facility
DUBOIS – DuBois City Council will consider holding a public hearing for RHJ Medical Center Inc.
DuBois City Mayor John “Herm” Suplizio announced Monday night that council had received a request from the officials representing the drug treatment facility for a certificate of use. As part of that request, a public hearing must be held to get public input on the opening of a drug treatment facility that uses methadone to treat patients

DuBois Area School District Board of Directors, DESPA Agree on Contract
DUBOIS – It’s been in the works for almost three years now. After a strike last fall and an agreement to come back to work, the DuBois Education Support Professional Association accepted a contract from the DuBois Area School District Board of Directors.
On Wednesday night, the board approved the agreement between the two entities, which is effective retroactively from July 1, 2006, and will run through June 30, 2011.

Clearfield DA Speaks About Kidnapping Charges
WOODLAND – The story is one that sounds as though it would play out on a big or even a small screen and not one that would have two men in Clearfield County Jail in lieu of a quarter-million dollars bail each on kidnapping charges. That, however, is what happened Monday night in three Clearfield County municipalities.
Richard A. Rauch, 47 of Hyde, and Randall C. Bolton, 41 of Clearfield, are alleged to have kidnapped a 28-year-old Houtzdale man from his home at gunpoint Monday at about 8 p.m.

Governor Rendell Awards $3.4 Million to Replace Water Supplies Affected by Abandoned Mines in Clearfield County
DECATUR TOWNSHIP – Gov. Edward G. Rendell Friday announced the investment of more than $3.4 million to extend municipal water lines and provide clean, safe and reliable water supplies to about 135 homes in Boggs and Decatur townships where wells have been affected by abandoned coal mines.
The majority of the homes are in Decatur Township.
