Illinois Men Plead in Counterfeit Sneaker Case

CLEARFIELD – Two Illinois men will forfeit nearly $5,000 and alleged counterfeit goods after entering a plea agreement Wednesday at Clearfield County Centralized Court.

Makhtar Diop and Amadou Diop were stopped on Interstate 80 on Dec. 20 at about 10 a.m. for driving 60 mph in a 40 mph work zone near mile marker 125.

Court documents show that the state trooper who stopped the cousins noticed several large boxes and several trash bags in the back of the Diop vehicle.

“Through my experience, I have found that the blue and black trash bags are typical in the counterfeit trade,” paperwork for the cases read.

The men reportedly told the trooper they were traveling from New York back to the Chicago suburb of Mount Pleasant, Ill. — where they live –after a shopping trip.

The men gave the trooper consent to search their vehicle, where he found a $50 bill in the car’s console along with another $1,000 in a rubber band in the console. A total of $3,800 was found under the passenger seat floor mat.

He also found 56 pair of Nike Air Jordan sneakers in the back seat of the vehicle.

Amadou Diop was found to be wanted by authorities in Rockville, Md., on separate charges.
