Final Work Planned on I-99 Remediation

CLEARFIELD – PennDOT is continuing work on final remediation of the pyrite and acidic run-off situation in Centre County. Remediation activities have been going on since fall. The following information details anticipated activities through early January, with all work weather-dependent.

PennDOT reminds drivers that they will not be able to see this activity from U.S. Route 322, but truck traffic does cross U.S. 322 in the Skytop area and flaggers are in place.

SURFACE WATER QUALITY, RESIDENTIAL WELL, AND GROUNDWATER MONITORING WELLS SAMPLING
These activities continue on a regular, on-going basis, with results made available through PennDOT’s monthly report and DEP’s web site.

C12 HIGHWAY SECTION
It is expected that work will include trench excavation for liner placement; placement of liner material on the rock buttress area and roadway bifurcation area; preparation of a clean fill material site for future excavation/use; and interim measures as noted above. The rock buttress and roadway bifurcation areas cover a section of highway that features lanes built at two different elevations separated by an earthen slope.

ERPA SITE
It is expected that work at the ERPA site will include planning and coordination meetings; skidding of downed lumber and chipping of brush; construction start for new sedimentation ponds; construction start for new channels to re-direct water away from ERPA site; and conversion of old storm water ponds to new sedimentation ponds.

PennDOT District 2 Executive Kevin Kline noted, “Remediation activity has been a long time coming and we are working hard to make active progress while the weather holds. We are very pleased to be working with Pennsylvania DEP on this phase and we will continue to keep the public informed of our progress.”
