HARRISBURG – Gov. Edward G. Rendell issued the following statement after Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Sandra Schultz Newman announced that she will retire, effective Dec. 31. The governor thanked Newman for her service on Pennsylvania’s highest Court.
“Justice Newman has served on the Pennsylvania Supreme court independently, with balance and a great deal of integrity,” said Rendell. “As the first woman elected to serve on Pennsylvania’s highest court, she has proven herself as a capable jurist and trailblazer for women across the commonwealth.
“Over the years I have appreciated her thoughtful deliberation, as well as her leadership and advocacy on behalf of children. I wish her the best of luck in her next endeavor.”
Upon her retirement, Rendell will have 90 days to nominate a replacement, who will be subject to Senate approval.
