One Miner Dead in Pa. Mine Explosion

HARRISBURG – The Department of Environmental Protection reported that a miner was killed in an underground accident at the R&D Coal Co. anthracite mine in Tremont Township, Schuylkill County. The mine has been cleared and no miners remain underground.

The cause of the accident has not been determined.

Inspectors from DEP’s Bureau of Mine Safety and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration are on the scene and in the mine conducting an investigation.

Anthracite mines in Pennsylvania are inspected every two months by DEP mine inspectors and twice a year by the department’s electrical inspectors. MSHA inspects anthracite mines quarterly.
