Habitat Gearing Up for Clay Street Construction

CLEARFIELD – Habitat for Humanity of Clearfield County volunteers will soon head to Green County for the first truckload of building materials for the organization’s ninth project, a home on Clay Street in Clearfield Borough’s East End.

Green County HFH raises funds by selling the house kits to other affiliates, according to HFHCC President John Farr. The new home in Clearfield will be under roof by Thanksgiving; students from the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center masonry program were laying the foundation this week.

Also by the holiday, the group plans to have demolished a home in on the lot of its next project, a home in DuBois at the corner of Shaffer and Pifer Streets. The property was donated to Habitat by Community Action of Central Pennsylvania with the stipulation Habitat remove the existing house, Farr noted.

“It’s worth it. This is a great lot, flat and big, and in a terrific neighborhood,” he said.

The family selection process is still ongoing for the Clearfield house. Meetings are slated for Tuesday and Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the CCCTC. Prospective Habitat families must attend a meeting to secure an application. They can also learn more about the organization and the qualifications for a home. The minimum requirements are having a low income, living in substandard housing, being able to repay a no-interest mortgage and donating at least 500 hours to a Habitat project.
