Fifth Annual King of the Mountain Set for Oct. 8

CLEARFIELD – The fifth annual King of the Mountain bicycle race to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Clearfield County is set for Oct. 8 with the first rider leaving the gate at noon.

Last year, some 60 racers rode the time trial, which climbs 1,000 feet over five miles from home base at Lawrence Township Fire Co. No. 1 up U.S. Route 322 to the top of Rockton Mountain. They came from throughout Pennsylvania and New York, Ohio and Virginia.

“More than $8,000 was raised for our organization last year through this event. It’s growing in participation and support each year and we’re excited about how it furthers our efforts. Because we have virtually no overhead, nearly all the money raised goes for building materials,” said HFHCC President John Farr.

The King and Queen of the Mountain will each receive a one-of-a-kind jersey and $200. Cash prizes will also be awarded in categories according to age, gender and choice of road or mountain bike. A special Up the Hill, Not Over it Award will be presented by the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging to the rider 65 or older with the best time.

Registration is $20 and $25 on race day. For more information, call 375-9718 or, after 9 p.m., 762-8635.

HFHCC’s ninth home is under construction in Clearfield.
