Clearfield Borough to Move Forward on Deliquent CAST Amusement Tax

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council gave their solicitor F. Cortez Bell III approval to move forward with the collection of delinquent amusement tax funds from the Clearfield Arts Studio Theater.

Bell said that thus far he has sent letters to CAST, but has yet to hear back regarding a certified mailing.

Bell said that CAST is arguing that because they are a non-profit organization, they are exempt from the tax

“The tax in not imposed on them (CAST),” said Bell.

Bell explained that the tax is levied against the people who attend an event such as a play or musical. The tax would be an addition to the regular ticket price, according to Bell.

In essence, if a ticket costs $8 normally, and if the tax were 5-percent, the ticket price should be raised to $8.40. The organization, bar or event would still make their $8.

“This is a passionate issue,” said council member Susan Reed. “It’s not fair to the taxpayers of the borough or anyone who willingly makes their contributions. We need to pursue this.”
