Three Arrested for Burglary and Theft

SMITHMILL – Two men and a woman were arrested Thursday after they broke into a Gulich Township garage and stole an industrial kettle.

State police at Clearfield report that Allen R. Root, 23, of Woodland, Lester E. Middlesworth Jr., 22, of Frenchville, and Melissa L. Cathcart, 22, of Frenchville, allegedly drove to the property of a 45-year-old man and entered his garage. Once inside, they reportedly stole an industrial stainless steel kettle valued at $1,000.

Troopers said the trio was detained while attempting to scrap the kettle for money.

All three were arrested on charges of burglary, theft by unlawful taking and conspiracy. They were all arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Patrick Ford and placed in Clearfield County Jail.

Root and Cathcart are held in lieu of $10,000 straight bail. Middlesworth is being held in lieu of $50,000 straight bail.

Preliminary hearings have yet to be scheduled.

Middlesworth appeared before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins on counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault and indecent assault two weeks ago. Those charges were bound over for court, and he was released on unsecured bail at that time.
