County Republicans Gather at Annual Corn Boil

CURWENSVILLE – Clearfield County Republicans gathered in Irwin Park on Wednesday afternoon to support candidates in the November election at the Clearfield County Republican Committee’s annual corn boil.

“It’s a chance for everyone to get together and share views of this past summer and the political futures of (Lynn) Swann and (Jim) Matthews, (John) Peterson, (Rick) Santorum and Richard Hansel,” said CCRC chairman Jim Flowers.

Swann is running for governor, while Matthews is running for lieutenant governor. Peterson represents the Fifth District in the U.S. Congress, and Santorum represents Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate.

“I look for Swann to surprise people,” said Flowers.

Eleanor Ludwig, the first woman to hold the position of county commissioner in Clearfield County, noted that voters need to be reminded about the pay raise that the area’s current state representative agreed to.

While Santorum was not present, his representative in the area, Jim Thompson spoke on Santorum’s behalf.

“I’m encouraged with who I’ve spoken with tonight,” said Thompson.

“We have an easy case for Senator Santorum,” said Thompson. “Mr. Casey doesn’t have a lot to say. He’s not much of an ideas guy.”

Santorum will be defending his seat against Democrat Bob Casey Jr.

Hansel, who is running against State Representative Camille “Bud” George D-74, served corn to his fellow republicans as well as his views on his opponent.

Hansel noted that the incumbent approved and accepted a much-criticized pay raise.

“He still hasn’t given it back,” said Hansel. “And he probably won’t.”

Hansel noted hold-ups for construction of the new Cornell Prison, as well as the failure of the Philipsburg Hospital.

“The incumbent was in so closely, it wasn’t good for us,” said Hansel.

Hansel said he was very dedicated and serious about his campaign, and that he works on it all the time.

“I believe i am a person for change,” said Hansel.

“I want to be representative for all the people, not a select few,” added Hansel.
