Curwensville School Board Looking for Volunteers to Serve on Commission

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville School Board announced Monday night that that they were seeking volunteers to serve on a tax study commission.

School districts are required to appoint a tax study commission by Sept. 14, and it can include five, seven or nine people and must be representative of the socioeconomic, age and occupational diversity in the district.

The law stipulates that no official or employee of the district or their relatives may serve as a member of the commission. However, one appointee may be a school board member.

The commission will study the district’s historical and present rates of tax revenue to determine how the tax policies could be improved. The commission will also gather data on the age, income, employment and property uses that characterize the current tax base. The commission will also study the projected revenues of taxes currently assessed.

Curwensville School District Superintendent Norman Hatten said that within 90 days of its appointment, the commission will make a non-binding recommendation to the school board regarding the imposition of taxes, including earned income and personal income taxes for the subsequent fiscal year.

Hatten said that those interested in serving on the commission need to send a letter of interest, including background, to board secretary Janice Litz, on or before Sept. 8.
