STRONGSTOWN, PA – Coy’s Store and Nanty Glo Auto Parts sponsored the racing action at Dog Hollow Speedway Friday night as “Hot Rod” Rodney Phillips of Punxsutawney in the super late models and Tim Good of Vintondale in the Brush Valley Tire Pure Stocks took their first feature wins of the season.
Repeat winners included Shawn “Sheets” McGarvey of Coalport in the Townsend Gas and Oil Steel Block Late Models, Mike Laughard of Twin Rocks in the Hugill Sales and Service Street Stocks and Matt Shirk of Nanty Glo in the Texas Auto Ranch Four Cylinder Sidewinders.
In the super late models Rodney Phillips and Dave Padula led the field to the green with Padula taking the lead. Padula was setting the pace until lap three when Phillips went around Padula for the lead. Phillips was pulling away, but Dave Blazavich was coming. The young Indiana driver came from seventh and was closing on the leader, once he caught Phillips its easy to pass him. Blazavich tried the outside and the inside, but he ran out of time. When the checkered flag waved it was Phillips taking the win ahead of Blazavich, Rick Strong, Ben Satterlee and Cody Schultz. Heats wins went to Ben Satterlee and Rick Strong.
Clate Copeman led the opening lap of the steel block late model feature, but by lap two Shawn McGarvey was out front and not looking back. As the race neared the finish, Randy Smithley moved into second and reeled in McGarvey, but McGarvey held on for his second win of the season. Smithley, Jim Parson, Copeman and Gary Stahl completed the top five. Gary Stahl, Jim Parson and Shawn McGarvey won the heats.
Rusty Martz led fellow front row starter Mike Laughard into the first turn and led the first lap of the street stock feature, but Laughard maneuvered aound Martz a lap later and the duo pulled away from the field. The top two put on a great show, then Nick Goss reeled them in and fought for the win as well, but it was all Laughard taking the victory. Martz, Goss, Andy Burns and Josh Jacoby completed the top five. Heat wins were split between Andy Burns and Nick Goss.
Tyler Hite took the lead at the start of the pure stock feature for the first four laps, then Tim Good went to the inside off the fourth turn and took the lead. Once he was out front Good was able to hold off the challenges of Hit and eventually Scott Lorenzo for the victory, his first of the season. The top five were Good, Hite, Lorenzo, Tim Laughard and Pete Ivory. Heat wins went to Bryan Imler, Scott Lorenzo and Tim Good.
In the four cylinder sidewinders Matt Shirk took the lead from his pole starting spot. Mark Faught moved to second early in the race and he tried everything short of crashing the leader to get past, but he didn’t do that, and Shirk held off the challenges from Faught for his third win of the season. Faught was second, Jay Schettini was third, Kirby Tucker was fourth and Virgil Small was fifth. The four heats went to Mark Faught, Mark Maglet, Eric Hoover and Matt Shirk.
DOG TRACKS: 118 cars filled the pits including 18 super late models, 23 steel block late models, 19 street stocks, 22 pure stocks and 36 four cylinders…Coming up this week there will be a regular show for the super late models, Townsend gas and Oil Steel Block Late Models, Hugill Sales and Service Street Stocks, Brush Vaqlley Tire Puire Stocks and Texas Auto Ranch Four Cylinder Sidewinders.
