Debbie Wright receives Service Above Self Award at Curwensville Days

CURWENSVILLE – She has made pins for several fundraisers in Curwensville, donating her time and materials. She has taken part in “Search For Peace,” and she has helped with events for Curwensville Area School District, the American Cancer Society and the Curwensville Rotary Club.

In all of the accomplishments of Debbie Wright, she has given of herself, and for that, the Curwensville Rotary Club presented her with the Service Above Self Award at Curwensville Days.

For the past 30 years, the Curwensville Rotary Club has been in charge of the award, and before that, the Jaycees and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary performed the honors. A change came this year, however, when the Rotary changed the name of the award from the Citizen of the Year.

Bill Williams Jr. of the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home in Curwensvile was chairperson of this year’s selection committee for the award. At the ceremony held Sunday night at Irvin Park in Curwensville, said “This honor is not a trophy to be won or an accolade of small significance. This is an award that has to be earned.”

Williams said the honor goes beyond the everyday accomplishments. “The person, persons, groups or businesses that have been the recipient of this award are not necessarily the most notable in the community nor the one who gets their picture in the paper the most times, but a person that has given of their time and talents and worked for the common good of everyone both in Curwensville and in the surrounding communities.”

Past recipients have included Pat Domico; Rescue, Hose & Ladder Co. of Curwensville; the Curwensville Women’s Club; Anne Tkacik; and Lezzer Lumber Co.

Curwensville Days also hosted Crossover Christian Gospel Band before the vespers service Sunday.
