Day two of Clearfield baseball tourney

CLEARFIELD — On the heels of a doubleheader sweep Saturday, Dingers of Clearfield had the opportunity to really tighten the Continental Collegiate Baseball League race Sunday but managed only seven hits in losses to undefeated State College 6-1 and Kersey 5-4.

Manager Ed Yeager\’s second-place club fell to 7-3, three full games behind State College.
Jason Zink, a former Central Mountain High School and Allegany College of Maryland ace, stymied the hosts on three infield singles for the league leaders\’ 11th win. He was unhittable while his mates were building a 5-0 lead and wound up with 11 strikeouts.
Zink lost the no-hitter and shutout in the fifth inning when he issued two walks and then failed to cover first base on Brandon Baughman\’s slow roller to the right side.
Baughman was the losing hurler, striking out 10 but surrendering eight hits and five walks.
Five Dingers errors aided State College, which had only three earned runs.

In the nightcap, the Kersey Diamonds jolted the Clearfield team behind rookie Ben Sheeley\’s four-hit pitching and Brandon LaBrozzi\’s two-run double in the sixth inning. Sheely struck out six and walked five.

Dingers had erased a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Davidson drilled a sharp single past third base for two runs, Scott Hugney followed with a sacrifice fly and Cory Bailor reached base on a throwing error.
Dusty Minarchick was tagged with the setback.
Cory Bookhamer of Clearfield singled and doubled for Kersey.
Dingers returns to action Saturday at State College, taking on the hosts at 3 p.m.
