HARRISBURG, Pa. (EYT) — With a new school year approaching, Pennsylvania State Police are asking drivers to use extra caution as students, school buses, and additional traffic return to roadways across the Commonwealth.
The start of the school year typically means increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic during morning and afternoon commutes. Police are encouraging motorists to allow additional travel time and remain alert for children walking to and from school, waiting at bus stops, or crossing roadways.
Drivers should also reduce their speed when traveling through school zones and be prepared to stop when approaching school buses that are loading or unloading students.
State police are also reminding teen drivers to plan ahead and leave early rather than rushing to school. Young drivers should avoid distractions, follow posted speed limits, and make sure everyone in their vehicle is properly restrained.
As students return, Pennsylvania State Police said troopers will continue enforcement efforts around school zones and along school bus routes.
Enforcement will focus on speeding, distracted and aggressive driving, seat belt violations, and violations involving stopped school buses.
Motorists are encouraged to remain patient as traffic patterns change with the beginning of the school year and to put phones and other distractions away while behind the wheel.
State police are asking everyone on the road to slow down, buckle up, and remain attentive to help keep students, families, and school personnel safe.
